How it works: X and Z are divided by 8 going into the Nether and multiplied by 8 coming out. Y doesn't scale, but the Nether only goes up to Y 128 — build below that or the game may link your portal somewhere unexpected. When the game searches for an existing portal to link to, it checks a small radius around the ideal spot, so getting within a few blocks is usually enough.
